The present-day town was formed in 1960 by the merger of the previously independent towns of Brandýs nad Labem and Stará Boleslav. The first written mention of Brandýs nad Labem dates from 1304, when it was recorded as the market village of Brandýs with a bridge and a church. According to tradition, Saint Wenceslas, a duke, was murdered in Stará Boleslav in 935; Duke Břetislav I founded its Romanesque Basilica of St Wenceslas after 1039. The Renaissance castle in Brandýs nad Labem, decorated with sgraffito, hosted Habsburg rulers including Rudolf II; the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Stará Boleslav holds the Palladium of the Czech Lands.
