Kostelec nad Černými lesy lies about 30 km east of Prague. The town stands at an altitude of around 400 m and is surrounded by woodland. In 2025, it had 4,156 residents.

The earliest written record of the local castle dates from 1348, and the neighbouring village was granted town status in 1489. The Renaissance chateau was built in the 16th century on the site of a castle destroyed by fire in 1549; Ulrico Aostalli also led its construction. The historic centre is a protected urban heritage zone. The Baroque parish church of the Guardian Angels dominates the town square and dates from 1735–1737.
