Louňovice lies about 30 km south-east of central Prague and 9 km east of Říčany. In 2025, it had a population of 1,277.

The first written record of Louňovice dates from 1407. The open-air stonemasonry museum in Louňovice recalls the local tradition of granite quarrying and stonemasonry. One of the foundation stones of the National Theatre came from the Kaménka quarry near Louňovice.
